on labelling 'new' comments! (crosspost from my DW)

Posted by: sockymcsockerson

Hello!

I don't know about you, but one of the few changes I actually did like in LJ was the handy 'new' comment things that popped up when you revisted a page. Fortunately, there is a way to implement them in DW and make them work in the same way. The steps I'm going to detail have been tried and tested in both Firefox and Chrome, and should work without much problems.

( ... )

(original comment here / DW post here)

comments

Tropo Red & profile page tweaks

Posted by: turlough

I've made a userstyle that tweaks the Tropo Red site scheme a bit and makes the profile page look more like LJ's did before they changed it.

All site scheme pages have a slightly larger font size and the visited links are in a different colour - the same as the hover colour for the page and a light grey for the drop-down menus.

On the profile page I've got rid of the grey bar under the username and the dotted lines below the section headers. I've moved the default usericon to the right (where it belongs, dammit!) and removed the unnecessary toolbar/actionbar text. I made the title and subtitle larger, made the stats slightly larger and in black, and made the font size of any adult warning match the rest of the stats and also removed the bolding of this line.

This is how my profile looks with the script installed.

You can install the script here on Userstyles.org.

comments

User scripts and styles

Posted by: qilin

User scripts styles can modify a site you are viewing to look differently, or even add new features! It's easiest to use them in Firefox with the Greasemonkey and Stylish add ons, but other browsers have some capabilities to use them too. User styles can change the look of a site by adding CSS. User scripts can do anything that you can do in Javascript--this can mean broad and sweeping changes to a site's functionality! User scripts can do anything user styles can do, and more, because Javascript can insert CSS. However, it is more efficient to use user styles if all you are doing is modifying some CSS.

Dreamwidth already has some user scripts and styles available on the two main sites about them, userscripts.org and userstyles.org. For instance, the Dreamwidth specific user scripts include a script that remembers what comments you've already read and one that automatically updates the time of a post to the current time. There are also Dreamwidth specific user styles. One fun use of user style CSS is to make a Dreamwidth site scheme skin, and ninetydegrees has made one called Dive In/Pink. It schemes the Tropospherical site scheme with new colors and images! User styles are a great way to get the site to look more to your personal taste.

As fun and useful as user scripts and styles are, please remember that they're not officially supported! Dreamwidth can change pages or code and your customizations might stop working. Be sure to disable user scripts and styles before making a Support request, to check and see if the problem might be originating with them and not the site itself.

comments
